Preparing for our visit of the very much hyped-up Taman Negara, Malaysia’s largest (4,343 sqkm) and most aggressively sold national park (60,000 plus visitors annually rummage its ground near the main entrance) and reading in a sustainability analysis about the park’s most serious problems: (i) too many visitors, (ii) soil erosion, (iii) litter, (iv) vegetation damage and (v) water pollution.
“The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function.”

Booking our transport from Jerantut to scruffy Kuala Tahan, the main entrance to Taman Negara, with reliable NKS Hotel & Travel +6092664488, paying MYR 41.- or US$ 13.70 per person for the complete transport package which consists of (i) the smooth 20-min minibus ride from Jerantut to Kuala Tembeling, (ii) the 65-km/3-hr long long-boat ride upriver on the almost bird-free Sungai Tembeling from Kuala Tembeling to Kuala Tahan, a mucky settlement opposite the park’s headquarters which looks more like a dirty Seffrican squatter camp than a clean Malay kampung, and (iii) the entrance fee for the Taman Negara national park (MYR 1.- or US$ 0.30 per adult) and entering the big and scary jungle in order to "take only plants, kill only animals and leave only rubbish", or something like that.
“Don't be afraid to be confused. Try to remain permanently confused. Anything is possible. Stay open, forever, so open it hurts, and then open up some more, until the day you die..."
