Hopping uneventfully with Air Asia (“Now Everyone Can Fly”) in a clean, signature-red Airbus A 320-200 from Kuala Lumpur’s modern Low Cost Carrier Terminal (KLIA-LCCT) at Sepang to Kota Bharu (Sultan Ismail Petra Airport), situated on West Malaysia’s sunny east coast (despite the ongoing northeast monsoon), for MYR 39.- or US$ 10.-, one way, per person, all inclusive, and taking the hourly brand-new and cheap city bus no. 9 (bus stop) for MYR 1.50 per person to the city centre of Kota Bharu, the capital city of Kelantan - the cradle of (Islamic) Malay culture.
“There were three 1Malaysians on an airplane from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu. Suddenly, the plane was about to crash and the three men decided to pray and hope that their gods would save them from disaster. The Indian prayed, jumped off the plane and survived the fall. The Chinese prayed, jumped off the plane and survived the fall. But unfortunately, the Malay did not jump off the plane and died. Why? In a state of panic he couldn’t find the green qiblah locator…”

Sampling the local culture and cuisine at Kota Bharu’s famed and dry pasar malam (the Malay night market which closes down for evening prayers between 07:00 p.m. and 07:45 p.m.), feasting on delicious nasi dagang (a mix of white rice and brown glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk and accompanied by spicy tuna curry and pickled veggies) and nasi ulam aka nasi kerabu (blue rice with fish/seafood/keropok, salted egg, coconut-stuffed chillis and exotic spices) and learning that the blue color of the rice comes from the aphrodisiac petals of  local butterfly-pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea) aka kembang telang.
